In a colourful atmosphere at the District Office of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone in Magburaka town, Paramount Chiefs in the Northern District of Tonkolili have on Thursday 20th February 2025 nominated Hon. Following the death of the Hon. P.C Alhaji Masakama Kanamanka III on 8th November 2024, Tonkolili District has been without a Paramount Chief Member of Parliament.
Any time there's an election for the position of Paramount Chief Member of Parliament in Tonkolili District, according to a "Memorandum of Understanding" signed by all Paramount and Regent Chiefs in 2018, it was agreed that the Chiefs will sit together to endorse one person in an internal election-like to be overseen by the District Officer. The MOU also says the position must be rotational among chiefs.
This is to avoid conflicts between and among chiefs who are seen as fountains of peace in their respective communities and Chiefdoms.
