The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has officially appointed former national team captain and football icon Mohamed Kallon as the new Head Coach of the Sierra Leone National Senior Men’s Team, Leone Stars. The announcement, made via an SLFA press release, marks a major milestone in Sierra Leonean football.
Kallon, widely regarded as one of Sierra Leone’s greatest footballers, assumes the role with immediate effect as the national team prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Leone Stars are set to face Guinea Bissau and Egypt next month, with Kallon now leading the team from the sidelines.
The SLFA expressed confidence in Kallon’s leadership, emphasizing his wealth of experience, passion, and deep understanding of the game. A press conference will be scheduled later for his official unveiling.
Kallon’s appointment as head coach is a moment of pride for Sierra Leonean football. The former striker enjoyed a remarkable playing career, having represented top European clubs, including Inter Milan, AS Monaco, and Bologna.
Born in 1979, Kallon made his international debut for Leone Stars at just 15 years old and went on to become the youngest player ever to score in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1996. His performances in both club and national team football made him a household name across Africa and beyond.
One of his most significant achievements was guiding Sierra Leone to AFCON 1996, a tournament where his exceptional talent was on full display. Throughout his career, Kallon played over 30 matches for Leone Stars, scoring crucial goals and serving as a mentor for younger players.
After retiring, Kallon remained deeply involved in football, founding FC Kallon, one of Sierra Leone’s top clubs, dedicated to developing young talent. His leadership at the club level has now earned him the opportunity to lead the national team on the global stage.
As Kallon takes charge of Leone Stars, he faces the challenging task of revitalizing the national team and securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His experience in high-level football and strong tactical knowledge could provide the edge needed to push Sierra Leone toward greater success.
Fans and football analysts alike see his appointment as a bold and positive move for Sierra Leonean football. With World Cup qualification at stake, all eyes will be on Kallon as he seeks to inspire a new generation of Leone Stars players and make history once again.
