Fourah Bay College Suspends Students’ Union Election Due to Security Threats

The Deputy Registrar of Fourah Bay College, Brima Bah, has announced the suspension of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) election, which was originally slated for Saturday, May 25, 2024. This decision was made in response to ongoing investigations into a series of alarming incidents on campus.

Bah revealed that the election had to be postponed due to “unsavory acts” committed by certain student groups. These acts included spreading used engine oil, commonly referred to as ‘burn oil,’ at the entrances of offices and lecture halls, and an attempted arson at the Administration Building.

The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of Friday, May 24, 2024, also involved assaults on security personnel and the circulation of threatening messages, further escalating tensions on campus.

“The growing unrest and violent incidents have created serious security concerns, disrupting the peace and tranquility on campus,” Bah said. He further noted that these disturbances have already affected the first week of the second semester, putting the majority of students, who are eager to start their lectures, at a disadvantage.

Students are advised to continue with their academic activities while the administration completes its investigation. “We will provide an update on the next steps once our investigation is concluded,” Bah assured.

The administration has issued a stern warning to those disrupting campus peace, stating that anyone found threatening national security will face severe consequences. “The individuals involved in the attempted arson have been handed over to the police for investigation, and others engaging in subversive activities will face similar consequences,” Bah emphasized.

Bah called for the understanding and cooperation of all students dedicated to their academic progress.
